Durham School Bus Workers
Updated On: Nov 09, 2016

On February 22, 2013 employees at Durham Bus voted 112-74 to join Teamsters Local 991. These employees are Santa Rosa County school bus employees located in Pace, Milton and Navarre, Florida.

On September 11, 2014 Durham School Bus drivers and monitors participated in a "just practicing" picket outside the Durham School Services school bus yard in Milton, Fla. The school bus workers, members of Teamsters Local 991 in Mobile, Ala, protested Durham's continued refusal to negotiate a contract with their union in violation of federal labor law.

By practice picketing, Durham school bus workers are bringing attention to their struggle and calling on the company to respect the law and negotiate a contract in good faith. This practice picket did not impact students getting to and from school.

Durham school bus workers voted overwhelmingly in Feb. 2013 to join Teamsters Local 991 in Mobile, Ala to improve school bus safety and their working conditions. The National Labor Relations Board has ordered certification of their election and in July issued a complaint against Durham for failure to bargain, yet Durham management continues in its refusal to negotiate with the drivers and monitors.

Durham school bus drivers and monitors spoke at the Santa Rosa County School Board meeting about concerns over abusive treatment of workers and safety issues, including air conditioning problems and bus breakdowns.

Durham is the subsidiary of National Express, a multinational, multi-million dollar corporation headquartered in the United Kingdom, with local operations in Milton, Pace and Navarre.
